Gloster Gamecock (Finland)
My entry to LarryTad’s Pre-WWII challenge, a Finnish Gloster Gamecock. First flown in 1925, the Gamecock was a development of Gloster’s earlier design, the Grebe III. The biggest changes being the engine and internally mounting its two .303 MGs, the Gamecock was accepted into RAF service in 1926. Although it was praised for its maneuverability, it had a reputation of being difficult to control, leading to many crashes and its eventual removal from RAF service. But, that is not the end of the story, as the Japanese would use it known as the Nakajima A1N, and more famously by the Finns as Kukko, who where able to use them quite effectively in the Winter War against the Soviets. I chose to use the more modern Finnish Air Force roundels, but it exemplifies every part of the real Gamecock, slow, highly maneuverable, and a bit tricky to take off and land, but learn to master it and you’ll be shooting down Soviets in no time.
