Overview
The Rhinemaiden Type 55 (Durin R.S.-37; Kreideprinz 537 Crossbow; Gerhardt 261 in contemporary terminology) is a medium-range quadjet airliner that first served in autumn 1955 with the Vienna Air Transport Company and the Fruhling Airline Company.
225 were built and 38 survives to this date.
Development
The bureau, called the Kriede Aviation Company at that time, theorized that faster aircraft brims more profit, reliability and less time consuming than slower aircraft that occasionally resulted in breakdowns, longer flight time and slightly higher than average ferry cost.
Developed as a private venture with the Vienna and Fruhling companies, the model 55 jet aircraft is based on the unrealized turboprop Durin 47 (R.S.-32, KrAvia 447, RhinACo type 54C2C, Gerhardt 245), fitted with four modified Qilin-brand afterburning jets. However, Chinese embargo was imposed and the design team was forced to use the Vikram jet engines.
First flight was conducted, flown as the Crossbow at August 23, 1954 and entered service as the current name at August 1, 1955.
