The F4F Wildcat was one of the first monoplane naval fighters, being first flown in 1937. This robust, rotund aircraft fought the Japanese valiantly, notably its contemporary, the A6M2, or "Zero". The wildcat was heavy, fuel-thirsty, sluggish, and outclassed, the Wildcat is known by many as the most important fighter of the US Navy during World War Two. This particular aircraft is based off of an F4F-4 which flew from the escort carrier USS Sargent Bay, the same ship that my late great grandfather was a radar operator on. The Sargent Bay was at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Guam, and recieved six service stars during World War Two.
