About the locomotive:
In 1949, Electro-Motive Division came up with a solution that had polluted the earlier F units. The concept was a locomotive that had a cab with visibility towards the rear, which was accompanied by the fact you could now see what wasn't visible from the high nose.

Specs

Powered by the EMD 567B diesel engine that produced 1500hp at 800rpm, the 16 cylinder engine was definitely a rival to the road switchers at the time, mostly to Fairbanks-Morse, ALCo, and Baldwin. They had already entered the market with locomotives like the RS-3, but the GP7 was more practical, in size and power to weight ratio - not to mention it was MU capability. It didn't take long for them to be known as Geeps.

About the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad
Formed in 1891, the railroad was originally from two neighboring railroads wishing to merge. The Bangor and Aroostook soon took to hauling the most valuable products in Northern Maine: potatoes and lumber. During the second World War, more than 50% of the profits made during the railroad were from potatoes.

.

During the 50s, Pennsylvania Central (PC, Penn Central) began to lose care in their products. Most of the potatoes from Maine were shipped in the iconic red, white, and blue high cube steel boxcars, which would be known country wide for its vibrant colors. In fact, the BAR's amount of heated boxcars would only be beat by the Santa Fe Railroad, out west.

.

The 60s was one of the worst points to the railroad's economy until the 80s, when a depression would cause almost every railroad to collapse. At this time in history, trucks were the biggest competitors to the company. The highways being built didn't cause the lose of the potato business, though. Penn Central's handling never improved, and it was common for trains to idle for too long, and the heaters would fail on the BAR boxcars on PC track. The eventual fall wouldn't happen for awhile. It's one of the most recent fallen flag railroads in America, since it went bankrupt in 2003.
