Fictional Story
The N1A2 Seiran is powered by a 2,400 hp water-cooled engine and armed with four 7.62 mm machine guns, along with a 30 mm cannon mounted to fire through the propeller hub. Although slower than its main rival—the WNA’s F-10B Swordfish—at low altitudes, the Seiran outpaces it significantly above 5,000 meters.
The idea of using a turboprop engine was firmly rejected by the team of engineers behind the aircraft, due to concerns that it would make the airframe too heavy and sluggish. Instead, they focused on refining a proven piston engine platform to achieve a balance of power, agility, and reliability. The result was a rugged, responsive machine with superb turn performance and excellent high-altitude capability.
During the height of the SAF–WNA conflict, the Seiran became the SAF’s workhorse in the skies. Its versatility—made possible by the ability to carry up to four 230 kg bombs and two rocket pods under its wings—allowed it to perform not only as a high-altitude interceptor, but also as a capable ground-attack aircraft. With both sides deploying equal forces, the Seiran’s adaptability and pilot-favored handling gave it a crucial edge. It was not uncommon for SAF squadrons to achieve significant successes in both air superiority and ground support missions thanks to this aircraft alone.
