Modern Surface Combatant Challenge
Deadline extended to 1st February 2021 due to multiple requests for an extension.
Welcome to my latest challenge! In this competition I ask you to build a surface combatant suitable for a modern navy. Since this is going to be a big ask, you have lots of time to get cracking.
Prize: 25 upvotes for 1st place, 5 upvotes for 2nd place, 1 spotlight for last place, every valid entry gets an upvote.
What is a Surface Combatant?
A surface combatant is a warship designed for surface warfare. This includes air defence, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and land attack. The modern ships in this class are the cruiser, destroyer, frigate and corvette. It does not include ships such as aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, nor fast attack craft or patrol ships. For the sake of this challenge, the ships must have had a class-member launched after 1970 and before 2030.
How will I be judged?
This challenge will run until December 18 2020, providing the world hasn't ended beforehand. After this date, the judging process will begin with me selecting ten finalists based on personal impression (so get good screenshots and write a good description). These ten will then be extensively evaluated by myself or an assistant should that be required. The ship will be judged on four categories: realism, functionality, personal impression and appearance, with a maximum of ten points per category.
What are the rules?
- The entry must be a successor (if this is not possible on posting, please ask a mod to change it).
- No mods should be required in order for the entry to be played in-game.
- The entry must have more than 200 parts.
- The entry must have no more than 1200 parts with drag, or 1500 without, so that I may judge it on my potato PC.
- The ship may be a replica. If so, it should have at least one member of its class launched after 1970 and before 2030.
- The ship may also be fictional. If so, keep it realistic.
- The entry must be uploaded publicly before 18:00 GMT on December 18 2020.
- It must be a surface combatant as per my definition (see above).

@HawaiiRanger You have until Good Friday, then I must close the challenge. Other participants are requesting that I hurry up.
@HawaiiRanger Do you still wish to participate?
@Typhoon03 I will. I'm working on the description right now, maybe I will upload today... you could start judging the others already, couldn't you?
Thank you!
@HawaiiRanger I will need to start judging at some point, so please upload as soon as you can.
@HawaiiRanger Ok, that's good. Judging will begin once you have uploaded it.
@Typhoon03 I should be able to post day after tomorrow or so...
@HawaiiRanger That works for me. I won't be able to judge them until the 15th anyway.
Hey, I am just about done (about a week) with my ship I've been working on about a year... I will also post it a little later (maybe February 13)so it can be entered into a SP Discord group's contest. If you don't mind making a little exception for me that would be great.
Thanks! I really appreciate it!
@HawaiiRanger I might do that if you haven't uploaded by the deadline. I won't do it just yet.
I know it may be too late to ask, but is there a possibility you could wait on the deadline if I'm not done? I've been working as hard as I can on something for almost a year and I would really appreciate it if you would hold the deadline back a little bit if needed. Thank you very much!
-P.S. There should be a teaser soon.
Screw it, send in the battleship
@NatsukiHoshino
Ok, nice. I look forward to seeing what you produce.
The parts of my Halsey Powell class guided mission frigate (3000+ part) have exceeded the standard, so I have to prepare a low configuration version to be selected.
@HawaiiRanger
The end date is set to the end of December anyway. If we reach December and you still haven't finished, notify me then and I will extend it if needed. I won't do that just yet because it is too early to tell.
Since there is only one entry so far, would you mind delaying it to the end of December- If that's not too much to ask? ;-) I am working on a HUGE ship project which I will enter if I finish it in time, and I would be really grateful if you would!
Thank you!
I'd suggest building a La Fayette class frigate or its variant, the Formidable class frigates. All have sleek lines and seem desirable for a ship 1000 or less. My potato phone isn't fit for building so all the best for the rest of you.
👍🏻@Typhoon_
PROVIDING THE WORLD HASN'T ENDED lmao
@CharlesDeGaulle
That's nice
I have a good idea, if I was a good builder and had the time, I would build an "Admiral Ronarc'h" frigate, a French frigate class under construction, the most modern combat ship, or an Aquitaine frigate
@ChrisPy
Not especially, but try studying other people's to see how they did it.
YES!!! I have been waiting for a challenge like this so I can make my ship!
Thanks!
any tips on how to make hulls?
Alright bet
