Boar Attack Mark III

147k Pilotmario  8.6 years ago
Auto Credit Based on Pilotmario's Boar Attack Mk 2

The premier attack warplane of the Pilotmario Air Force, it is an evolution of the original Boar. Its pilot is protected by a graphene-titanium "bathtub" which can resist shells up to 37mm. The forward positioning provides the pilot with unparalleled forward visibility. It has 18 hardpoints, and the center two are plumbed for drop tanks. At its core is a license-produced Mk 7 minigun from Gg1234, capable of shredding tanks like Swiss cheese, as well as break down structures like bridges. Press (1) to release drop tanks. To operate flaps, VTOL down. To operate air brakes, VTOL up. While it will never replace the Pummeler Mk 2 due to the Pummeler's low operational cost, high effectiveness, and availability, its larger payload and greater durability allow it to perform missions which even the Pummeler is incapable of doing. While many troops refer to it as the "Jet Hog", it has also earned the name "Flying Tank" due to its firepower and durability.

It is certainly based on the A-10. @Polandball

@DragonAerotech Honestly it only filled range requirements with one engine off and the other at 50-75% power. And while they appreciated the impeccable forward visibility, superior armor, and performance with weapons, it did not handle as well as the Pummeler, and did not like its over-reliance on jammers. The Pummeler was considered a far more maneuverable type, a homage to its fighter origins.

Even the Olympians and the Teutons regard the Pummeler as a more dangerous aerial opponent, especially when its bombs have been expended. While both are hopeless against modern jet fighters, the Pummeler is still effective against enemy attack planes, as they retain their gyroscopic gunsights, a carryover from their fighter legacy. In the meantime, the Boar uses a reflector gunsight.

As a tank killer, the Pummeler is just as good in many respects in the stopgap Mk 3 and the more permanent Mk 4 iteration. The Pummeler Mk 4 had four 30mm Mk 8 guns and four Mk 2 machine guns. Some units mounted the 30mm Mk 9 in its place, which had similar ballistic performance to the Mk 7 found here. The Mk 9-armed variants were not adopted officially due to its poor reliability in a wing mount.

The only reason why the Boar was adopted was because the Pummeler is an old plane, and spare airframes and parts were running low, and a modern replacement was needed. However, the junior military command responded negatively to the retirement of the Pummeler, and it was decided to return it to service, with more upgrades and low-rate production. The Boar is used against high value targets, where you need a literal flying tank in order to have a chance at survival.

@Pilotmario After flying the Pummeler I went on ahead to fly her successor, the Boar. I've got to be more of a prop-guy than jet because if given the choice between the two, despite loving the A-10 and being in awe of them when seen in person as a child, I'd still choose the Pummeler.

The Boar handles like a lead slead. While she is fast, she's a gas guzzler at low altitudes and takes a while to line up on a target and once you do you need to pull out right when accuracy of the rockets is most optimal. Misjudge that distance and you'll still take out the target ala Kamikaze. XD

The gun is indeed impressive but overpowered. (Sends bits of the bridge larger than the aircraft flying miles out to sea.) I used so-called "bridgekillers" in a lot of my designs to represent gauss weapons and my son swears by them. The trouble is that you cannot achieve kills against the other ground targets in the game, namely the ships, with this weapon. It used to send them flying off the horizon but now it just causes them to whirl about at supersonic speeds in broad circles. I haven't tried to reproduce the 30 mm Assault Autocannon (Vulcan? Avenger? Can't remember the name.) used by the actual A-10 yet, with it's high rate of fire, projectile weight and muzzle velocity with the new XML alterations so I don't know how they'll respond to that. I should probably put one together and test it out on Tiny before going after the fleet.

Needless to say, evading ground fire, guns or SAMs would be very difficult with the Boar. Although slower, I'd feel more confident in that situation with the Pummeler.

That's purely my opinion though and so should be taken with a grain of salt. I flew her only twice - so I can't say I developed any proficiency with her either.

Well, it's predecessor, the Pummeler, was referred to as the Hog by virtually everyone, and it seemed fitting to give this aircraft a similar name. @YuukaChan

@Glaceon the aircraft was inspired heavily by the A-10 in both role, configuration, and awesomeness.
