Turboprop CAS [FT Guided Bombs]

This was supposed to be a post about FunkyTrees powered guided bombs, but I got too caught up in building a plane to show them off, so here's a little about that first.

Turboprop CAS

Here is a turboprop close air support aircraft belonging to the fictional Air Force. Its small size and low payload are compensated by the technology and accuracy of its weapons. This makes it a formidable opponent for any ground or sea target.

Two turboprop engines allow this little guy to reach speeds of up to 700 km/h, and the layout and balance of the plane allow it to maintain high maneuverability even when it is fully loaded with weapons.

Weapons:
  • 4 Guided Bomb Units. Smart munitions that automatically aims to the target after being dropped. Equivalent to 500lb bomb in power, its enough to take down the USS Beast group or convoy in full.
  • 2 Dumb Bombs of 250lb, to finish job of guided bombs if needed, or attack extra targets.
  • 2 machine guns
  • Countermeasures (x100 ammo)
Features:
  • Cockpit with HUD (credits to dhtv587)
  • Has camera that tracks the selected target (credits to nafeij)

Guided Bomb (FunkyTrees)

The hero of the ceremony and why this plane was built at all - Guided Bombs powered fully by FunkyTrees programmed wings.

This example is dropped like a regular dumb bomb, but at the same time it independently adjusts its path using small wings (control surfaces) and accurately hits the target, even if it is moving - it can be a convoy, a ship or any ground target. It doesn't have missile or gyro inside. So it doesn't require locking the target, no propulsion, smoke trail, missile sounds or anything - it acts completely as bomb, keeping ballistic path

Guided Bomb Characteristics
  • Weight: 270 kg
  • Part Count: 15
  • Performance Cost: 60
  • Drag: 0
  • Dimensions (L/W/H): 3m x0.6m x0.5m
  • Collision: No

How to use

Just select the target (ship/convoy) and drop it as usual dumb bomb (fire weapons button). No ties to activation groups. Just keep the target selected throughout the bomb's flight.

A guided bomb is quite undemanding to launch conditions: any altitude, speed, angle, etc. But at the same time its not gliding bomb - it barely can fly more than what predictor says so when dropping, better to keep predictor somewhere near target (especially vertically)

Note: with 1/20 chance bomb can not explode and just fall through textures. Also sometimes it can go crazy when falling under 90° for long.

How to add guided bomb to your plane

  1. Detach flight computers from guided bomb and put them as subassemblies separately. Keep in mind that guided bomb and its flight computer are tied, so don't mix them around.
  2. Put guided bomb body you saved to your plane. Attach it, adjust position, etc.
  3. Put flight computer you saved to the scene and attack it to corresponding bomb body (keep in mind to not rotate it)
  4. Keep in mind that there are variables reserved for work of guided bombs: x1, y1, z1, p1, r1 h1, s1.
