Designed as a purely export tank, the HKP.II MBT series featured a smoothbore 105mm main gun, a fast top speed, good armor, and good overall crew safety. The armor consisted of: 105mm on the front of the hull, 75mm on the sides, and 60mm at the rear. On the turret, the armor was: 100mm at the front, 70mm on the sides, and 30mm at the rear. The crew consisted of three, including a driver, gunner, and commander. The HKP.II was an autoloading tank, meaning that overall it had a higher ROF than other MBTs of the time. The autoloading mechanism was different from others though, seeing as it would load a single shell at a time instead of in magazines of four to five. Maximum ammunition was fifty rounds, which was essentially anything that conformed to NATO rules and what could fit in the gun. It also had two 12.7mm machine guns for defense. As an export tank, the HKP.II did extremely well, being sold to over 70 countries. The JIDS (Jundroo Islands Defense Service) purchased over 250 vehicles (painted in colors shown). Since being put into service in 1971, the HKP.IIs in service with the JIDS have seen combat in every major war. A further 100 vehicles were purchased in 2001, bringing the total to 681. The tank is still in service around the world today.
