XTBF-34 Ferrell
Hello
The XTBF-34 was a part of "Project TBF-X," which was a highly classified course of events that held many "XTBFs" such as the following XTBF-34, XTB-91 and the XTBF-23 Its designed porpoise was to be a torpedo bomber that could double as a fighter if need be. It would be a tricky airframe to work with however, it posed many drag problems and some weight issues, it was 5,000lbs over weight for the program, so much in fact the original test flight (1/5/1949) wich was supposed to show how well the XTBF-34 could land on a carrier, but had to be changed to a controlled simulation if a carrier landing at Reduct AFB, although do to the only prototype crashing into the runway due to a lack of proper engine power. Then the second test flight (1/7/1957) wich took place at Crater NB, the XTBF-34 would have a problem with the airbrake wich would stop the brake from opening causing the plane to overshoot the runway and crash land into a beach due to a lack of fuel. After 5 other attempts at landing, the XTBF-34 would be forced into a flaps up landing at a beach.
