The AH-64E Block 2 Compound “Cyclone”

A high-speed, next-gen concept built on the Apache's legacy but re-engineered for 2020s combat needs. It replaces the traditional rotor-tail layout with coaxial rotors and a rear-mounted pusher prop, boosting its top speed from the Apache’s ~182 mph to 375 mph. Each enhanced engine sends 62% power to the rotors and 38% to the pusher, delivering excellent vertical agility and fixed-wing-level cruise. A streamlined, rounded cockpit and lengthened wings reduce drag and add lift, supporting heavier payloads and better fuel efficiency.

The Cyclone maintains the Apache’s core armament, Hellfires, Hydras, Stingers, and a 30mm chain gun, across four wing hardpoints, with the inner pylons supporting optional 70-gallon drop tanks. Its internal fuel capacity is 555 gallons, slightly reduced from standard 698 gallons to free up space for advanced electronics and electronic warfare (EW) suites, giving it greater situational awareness and survivability in contested environments. Despite the reduction, it maintains high efficiency, burning ~41 gallons per hour at cruise and consuming just 1% (5.55gal) of its fuel during 10 minutes at 375 mph, enabling a ferry range over 1,800 miles with drop tanks.

Though it lacks aerial refueling due to the rotor overlap over the cockpit, the Cyclone is designed for rapid deployment and strike roles. Compared to the Apache, it trades hover-heavy attack tactics for speed, range, and electronic dominance, making it a versatile contender in the evolving close air support role. While it may be a transition to newer platforms like Defiant X or tiltrotors, its blend of high performance, legacy firepower, and next-gen systems might make the Cyclone more than just a phase, it could be the future's unexpected frontrunner.
