Hawker P.1125 Harpy (Desert Storm)
Originally designed as a high-speed interceptor for protecting Britain from the air, the Hawker Harpy was soon mothballed in favour of the EE Lightning. The few aircraft built were shoved into sheds, and forgotten. Then the Gulf War came. Britain found itself with no large bombers, and America was demanding more support from the UK. So, the Harpies were dragged out of dark hangars, dusted off, then attacked with an angle grinder. Wings were clipped, noses were reshaped, and better radar and sensor packages, along with countermeasures. The engines were replaced with more powerfu models, better suited to the low altitude, high-speed role required. The aircraft was initially unpopular with crews, and there were many complaints about "60s relics". These soon changed when the crews found there was space for a relief pilot, a radar operated, and a toilet. The aircraft performed well, with both a large range of weapons available, and a large ordnance capacity. The aircraft here is equipped for long-range SEAD (Supression of Enemy Air Defences, eg SAM sites) missions, carrying one large anti-radar missile, two laser guided Maverick missiles, two drop tanks, and two AIM-9L Sidewinders for self defense. It was eventually retired in 2010, after a brief, but eventful service life. It was used in the Gulf Wars, Kosovo, Afghanistan and one was bought by Jordan, and is still in use. I spent a bit of time on this, the original idea is from DizzyFugu on Flickr. Proud of the front landing gear, it's my first real attempt at custom gear. AG 6 drops the drop tanks, which have no real effect, the fuel is inside the craft, they're just aesthetic. AG 7 is the parachute, and the missiles, flight, guns, and trim are as normal. Don't try to drop any of the bombs, they are inside the missiles for extra punch, and will probably blow up the craft if you try to drop them. Enjoy! Criticism and feedback is appreciated. Painted in that weird British desert pink colour.
