The F-22 Raptor is a fifth-generation fighter aircraft developed by Lockheed Martin for the U.S. Air Force. It entered service in 2005 and is renowned for its stealth capabilities, speed, and maneuverability. The F-22 was originally designed to counter advanced Soviet fighters but remains a formidable air-superiority platform even with the introduction of newer aircraft like the F-35 Lightning II. Procurement of the F-22 began in fiscal year 1999, and a total of 195 aircraft were procured through fiscal year 2009, including 177 production aircraft, 16 test aircraft, and 2 development aircraft. The F-22 assembly line was shut down in 2010 after the administration proposed ending procurement at 187 aircraft, which was approved by Congress. The F-22 has undergone several modernization increments to enhance its capabilities. For example, Increment 2 allowed Block-20 planes to launch guided Joint Direct Attack Munitions at supersonic speeds and improved the Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile capability. Increment 3.1 added enhanced radar and air-to-ground attack capabilities, while Increment 3.2B will increase electronic protection and add new missile capabilities. Since its introduction, the F-22 has faced operational issues, including a series of physiological incidents involving hypoxia-like symptoms among pilots. These incidents led to a grounding of the fleet and corrective actions to address the issues.
