American Short Track Racing Challenge
This is a little thing i thought of doing after watching some videos and doing the asphalt modified to make a challenge centered around the short track scene in america and specifically inspired by the 1980s where experimenting was common place. In this time many innovations came about and created the norms that are now common in the Whelen modified tour and the super modified scenes respectively.
your prompt
You are a backyard mechanic in the mid 2010s and a buddy of yours shows you a news article about mechanics making short track rockets in their backyard and racing at Oswego speedway in New York during the 1980s. Your local track is a small 1/8 mile oval that has three classes of cars based around the 1980s innovative cars and a lesser-known series. You and your buddy decide to create a car for one of three classes, an asphalt modified, a super modified, or a dwarf car Here's the track rules for each.
asphalt modifieds
asphalt modifieds are the oldest sanctioned series run by NASCAR, and has a long history dating back to 1948. These cars started out as modified cars (duh) and were often cars that were very cheap and easy to hop up and put bigger motors in. When you think of early nascar these are what you'll probably think of as the moonshiners series. By the 80s these cars became longer and has an offset body but the chassis remained the same, and is often referred as a straight rail chassis as the passenger side is straight to help with turning.
- no more and no less than 4 wheels
- should have aspects taken from real cars either older models or new cars such as grill, roofline or trunk area but there is no limit on changing heights, or lengths from the base car and the modified, but wheel base should not exceed 110 inches of be shorter than 90 inches
- engine should be a naturally aspirated v8, and have a maximum of 440ci and a max of 550hp. Fueling is it discretion but necessary safety needs to be added. Alcohol cars should have a green fuel cell, regular gas should have a red fuel cell
- engine placement is to be in the middle of the chassis, but after the engine the body can be offset as seen fit by the designer
- all cars have to have a roll cage completely protecting the driver, and around critical areas of the chassis.
- bodies typically don't have fenders so Nerf bars are required between the wheels and on the front and rear to minimize cars being launched by wheel to wheel contact.
- top speed should be no more than 150mph in a straight line and 0-60mph in no less than 3 seconds
Here is a link to a video on the asphalt modified so you know what im looking for for this challenge
Super modifieds
super modifieds are like their asphalt modified counterparts but have much less rules and is more open ended on what you can and can't do. They typically aren't based on real cars and is a series mostly made of backyard mechanics building homemade cars to race.
- no more and no less that 4 wheels
- general consensus is an offset engine from the chassis, as well as intricate exhaust, as well as some sort of lip in the rear to act as a wing. Bodies are normally rather flat to provide the most downforce
- engines similar to that of a modified, with power not exceeding 550hp, and a max displacement of 440ci NA V8. Alcohol is the only allowed fuel
- chassis shape and dimensions are open ended but a max of a 105in wheelbase and no more than 12inches over hanging each axle
- rollcage need to be adequate to protect the driver and Nerf bars are required (check asphalt modified for what nerf bars are)
- the body should not completely envelop at least the front wheels, but the body should not hang more that an inch over the rear wheels if done.
- engine placements could be either an inline, offset or rear engine design but power is to be to the rear wheels only, no front wheel or all wheel drive configurations allowed
- top speed should be no more than 150mph in a straight line and 0-60mph in no less than 3 seconds
dwarf cars
Dwarf cars are miniature models of 1928-48 cars typically at . 5/8 scale, and tend to have a more strict set of rules. These little cars are motorcycle engine powered and seem to be very simple yet fun cars to drive
- car bodies should be based on 1928-1948 cars, no roadster or convertibles allowed but trucks are allowed as long as the rear lid is covered. Fenders are not required, a top engine cover is required but the sides can be open and recommended for safety.
- chassis's should be built behind the cage and provide adequate protection to the driver, and nerf bars are required! (check asphalt modifieds for what nerf bars are)
- NA hyabusa engines are the only ones allowed, and light modifications to the bore and stroke are allowed but cannot exceed 200hp
- width should be no more than 68 inches, and a wheelbase of no more than 74 inches.
No aero additions are allowed like front splitters or wings and should look like the car its based on from a side profile.
- weight should be no less than 1000lbs empty and 1200lbs with a driver
- driver side exhaust only, and cannot exceed past the middle of the chassis or extend more than the middle of the nerf bars
-top speed should not exceed 105mph in a straight line and a 0-60mph in less than 4 seconds
scoring
Realism
total points possible 100
As it suggests your car should be realistic to the rules set and to the general ideas from the era. Your not to be making a modern version of the cars, your to make a car that you would see used in their respective classes on the 1980s. Your cars should have a construction like that of a race car and when shown next to cars of the same era and class should not stand out to much
Part count/part efficancy
total points possible 50
all entry's should be rather detailed yet demonstrate clever part usage
part counts should not exceed 700 but i want no less than 100 parts. Challenge yourself to make them detailed!
Please also try and disable drag so that its not as hard to run a higher part count
driving model
total possible points 100
the driving model should be realistic to each class and should feel very planted going around a short oval. Oval office is the only vanilla track that's an oval and i honestly dont like it but i dont know of any other short oval even in mod maps so it'll have to do. Any overly grippy or super fast cars will instantly be DQed. Examples, going around corners at 150mph flat out, or going 300mph in a straight line. 80s cars shouldn't be hyper planted and should be fairly loose compaired to modern cars. Cars that have larger flat areas that would make more downforce should have more grip than one that is rather bubbly and not super downforce heavy.
Only new designs are allowed and no stealing others builds or your instantly disqualified!
if you think someone stole a design let me know and link the proper author if they're already not in an auto tag

if you join please try and remain as accurate to the car your building as possible. These are a really cool part of automotive history and are fairly unknown by anyone and they deserve to get recognition. Look up examples and I have a few videos so you can get a better picture of what to make.

Clarifications list:
1. Asphalt modifieds should have a full body just minus fenders
2. Asphalt modifieds only come in a front engine configuration. If you do a mid or rear engine then it will be classified as a super modified.
If you need clarifications please ask!
Done handing out updoots. Thanks again for participating!
@AverageCursedPlaneBuilder @Applejuice2 imma just give you both 20 updoots sense yall were the only ones to participate. Thank you guys for participating!
@Applejuice2 thank you. Tbh kinda forgor about it.
@PapaKernels oh ok
@FOXHOUND26 as far as i know they are waaaayyyyy larger than any track these cars would have been on. These max do 1/4mile tracks, but do more 1/8 mile tracks. I'll look again but im pretty sure oval office is the only good one. Plus the banking on these track would max be 5-10° if they have any banking at all.
for maps what about the grid map 1.1 it has a oval or the Daytona one.
@Applejuice2 that will be fine. As long as its the proper scale when you post it it should be fine
According to the simpleplanes stats my car goes over the max wheelbase size but I think that is just because of the scale I built it at.
