Super Topheavy

Background

She was built in 1940 as a light cruiser armed with three 152mm triple-barreled guns, four 127mm anti-aircraft guns, two 610mm quadruple torpedoes, seven 40mm machine guns, and 18 20mm single machine guns. However, as time passed in the 1960s, these guns and machine guns began to become obsolete, and missiles were on the rise. The Navy decided to give the cruiser a major makeover. The aft guns, machine guns, and torpedoes were removed and replaced with two anti-aircraft missiles and two eight-round anti-submarine rocket launchers, as well as a control system and a new type of radar to control them. And so she was transformed from a light cruiser into a missile cruiser.

Design

The Republic of Oki Strait, where this ship was built, is located on an inland sea, so the cruiser has a long, narrow form suitable for the calm waters of the inland sea and for high speed. However, in order to mount three 152mm guns, a tall bridge was installed to facilitate ranging, and this, combined with the narrow shape of the ship, made it top-heavy. When the ship was converted to a missile cruiser, an attempt was made to improve stability by adding bulges, but the bridge design was not changed, so stability did not seem to improve much.
