Torpedo Challenge

26.3k BRuthless  8.8 years ago
Auto Credit Based on BRuthless's SilverSurfer v1.3 Long-Range Torpedo

Now that we have destructible ships with self-defence systems in the Beta, we need some effective weapon technology to take them out from distance with a low chance of any casualties on our side. The best way would be using ground or submarine launched long-range missiles, but we want to keep it simple and cost-efficient, so torpedoes are the way to go.
Because there aren't many designs available, we are going to have a competition to bring development forward.

How to enter:
Download the challenge, remove the sign, create a torpedo design and **put it on the belly of the included testbase (with a detacher)**. Upload it when you are done with testing and optimization. (Designs that are no successors won't enter the challenge)
**You are allowed to modify the testbase or create your own one (won't add to the rating), when your torpedo design is too large to fit on the provided testbase for example.**
Multiple entries are allowed (please remove old versions if you only add an updated version).

The torpedo should be self-propelled and stable in the air and water.
There are absolutely no limitations, you can mod whatever you want and use engine systems of your choice.

Deadline has been delayed to next Saturday (26.03.2016). Entries on Saturday and after won't enter the challenge.

I will rate the designs in the following classes:

Lethality 0-10 points (How much damage it deals) higher = better
Speed 0-10 points (How fast it will get to the target) higher = better
Stability/Accuracy 0-10 points (How stable it is in flight, on touchdown and in the water) higher = better
Compatibility/Size 0-5 points (How well it fits on different aircrafts) smaller = better
Maximum launch altitude 0-9 points (How low you have to fly for a stable touchdown and ride) higher = better
Minimum launch distance 0-5 points (How close you can be to the target without missing) lower = better
Maximum launch distance 0-10 points (How far you can be from the target without missing) higher = better (maximum tested will be ~4 nm)
Looks 0-5 points (Explains itself) rating is subjective

The winner of the challenge will be the design with the most points in total and get 10 upvotes.
The winner of each class will recieve 3 upvotes. If there are multiple winners in a class, the one with the most points in total will win the class.

Each design will have three chances to show it's performance at ~100 feet, ~1000 feet and ~1500 feet ASL (above sea-level).

I think that covers everything.

Happy building! :)

Weren't enough entries for a proper competition though. Only three of them are even valid. @Blueshadow

sorry @BRuthless the balancing stick on the underside of the torpedo causes it to turn a little to the left. The torpedo has a pretty short range because of that problem :/

@BRuthless sorry thought it said you will mount it

@Halfstrike It's said clearly in the description that it has to be mounted to a testbase. Either the one I provide or a modified version of it or your own creation. :D

@Halfstrike How am I supposed to fly it to the testrange then? :D It doesn't even work like this, as it has no fuel attached to the cockpit and the detacher flies directly into the propellers after launch.

    @Pauciloquent @bskngshrk Nice and solid entries. :)
@Halfstrike Can you tell me which of the planes is supposed to be the testbase, so I can put them together?

Edit: bskngshrk, why is your torpedo going in large circles all the time? :D

@BRuthless Okey I have uploaded my torpedo, had to make a new testbase... hope you like it : )

@bskngshrk And it needs a testbase. Just a very simple plane that can carry and launch it. :D

@BRuthless I have fitted two huge torpedos to my "Swallow", they are 27.7ft (8.44m) long and weighs 5,687lbs (2879 kg) and they can be controlled by VTOL... one torpedo can destroy one ship... I need to do some more tests but they seem to work great... I'll probably upload them tomorrow...

@Pauciloquent Alright. I might delay the deadline if there are less than 10 entries until Friday. :)

@Halfstrike I could count that as an entry, though it's supposed to be like this: You remove the sign, build a torpedo design, put it on the bottom of the testbase and then, after testing and optimization of course, upload it as a successor. :D
