History: Designed as a successor to the F-8 Crusader, the Super Crusader was meant to be an export only aircraft. The first test flight occurred on August 23, 1967, and soon thereafter the first aircraft was shipped to West Germany for further testing. The first German prototype, now under the name of FX-8X, took off on January 5, 1968. The aircraft succeeded in all categories including speed, agility, reliability, etc. Eventually, the aircraft was scrapped, but the data gathered from its flights and tests were key to developing future jet aircraft.
