Fictional history:

In the late 1980s, the PLAF needed a new interceptor capable of at least 450 miles per hour and with the "swing-wing" feature. The resulting two aircraft were: the J-11 Yuanxing and the Y-10 Yuanxing, both from different aircraft firms. The PLAF chose the J-11 to serve in its air force. For around ten total years the J-11A served in the PLAF, IAF, and other Asian and Middle Eastern air forces. It was finally retired from PLAF duty in 1995, where only three prototypes remain intact.
