The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is an American four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft designed and built by Lockheed Martin. Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medevac, and cargo transport aircraft. The versatile airframe has found uses in other roles, including as a gunship (AC-130), for airborne assault, search and rescue, scientific research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refueling, maritime patrol, and aerial firefighting. It is now the main tactical airlifter for many military forces worldwide.

Indonesia first received 10 C-130B and KC-130B aircraft in 1960 from the United States government as compensation for the exchange of captive CIA pilot Allen Pope who was captured after the aircraft used, namely the B-26 Marauder, was shot down by a P-51 Mustang piloted by by Commander Ignatius Dewanto for being involved in helping the Permesta rebellion in Sulawesi in 1958.

In 1975, Indonesia received 3 C-130B nurses. In the 1980s, under a program to increase the capabilities of the Indonesian air force, 3 C-130H aircraft, 7 C-130HS (long body) aircraft, 1 C-130 MP (maritime patrol) aircraft, 1 L aircraft -100-30 (for civil purposes), and 6 L-100-30s aircraft operated by PT Merpati and Pelita Air for transmigration purposes. The Indonesian Air Force also operates 2 KC-130 aircraft (air refueling version) for air refueling purposes.

In 1999, the United States Senate issued an embargo on arms sales and froze military relations with Indonesia, which was related to the East Timor crisis. This caused 17 C-130 aircraft to be unfit to fly due to lack of spare parts. On September 20 2000, after President Abdurrahman Wahid and Defense Minister Mahfud spoke with United States Defense Minister William Cohen at a meeting in early September, the United States government stated that it would allow the export of spare parts to Indonesia. However, for many years the import of spare parts from the United States was never carried out and the TNI then imported spare parts from other countries.

The United States Senate continues to declare an embargo on arms sales to Indonesia, but gives the United States president the right of exception.

Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono stated that around 70% of Indonesia's military budget in 2009 would be used to purchase C-130 aircraft. Of the 24 aircraft, only 6 aircraft are still airworthy. Meanwhile, the governments of the United States and Australia have promised to provide assistance in purchasing 6 Hercules type E and J aircraft. However, Indonesia may be more interested in purchasing type J (C-130J Super Hercules) which has a higher carrying capacity and more efficient engines.

Lockheed C-130H-MP Hercules TNI-AU

In the late 1970s 5 Squadron had Grumman HU-16 Albatros which were old and needed to be replaced. The TNI-AU has the opportunity to regenerate its maritime reconnaissance fleet. The Boeing 737-200, which will later be equipped with SLAMMR equipment, was chosen because it can reach Indonesian waters quickly. One unit of this aircraft became active in Squadron 5 in June 1982. The squadron with the mermaid symbol has a total of three Boeing 737-200 Surveillance versions.

Almost at the same time, the TNI-AU also ordered a Boeing 737-200 companion because it had shortcomings, it did not have SAR capabilities and plus it had a high speed – it had a jet engine – so it was not effective in combing the patrol area more thoroughly. The choice fell on the Lockheed C-130H-MP. This is logical considering that the TNI-AU already has a Hercules as a transport aircraft so that crew training is more practical.

C-130H-MP registered AI-1322, was first entrusted to Squadron 32 for training and crew operations, before being handed over to Squadron 5.

Heavy Transport Squadron 32 was designated as a transition squadron before being handed over to Squadron 5. Squadron 32's task is to maintain, prepare and operate the C-130H-MP, as well as train the Squadron 5 crew until they are ready to operate the aircraft themselves. This maritime patrol Hercules unit officially strengthened Squadron 5 at the end of August 1982 and was given the registration AI-1322

32nd Air Squadron


Air Squadron 32/Heavy Transport abbreviated (Skadud 32) is a Heavy Transport Squadron under the control of Air Wing 2 and is headquartered at Abdul Rachman Saleh Air Base, Malang Regency, East Java. in its initial stage it was equipped with a C-130 B Hercules aircraft. The 32 Heavy Airlift Squadron was formed on 20 July 1964. Thus, since 11 July 1981 the Indonesian Air Force has had 2 Heavy Transport Air Squadrons with the same type of aircraft. Air Squadron 31 is equipped with the C-130H Strech type (body) and Air Squadron 32 is equipped with the C-130 Standard type (body). With the increasing strength of the C-130 Hercules aircraft fleet, the Air Force leadership adopted a policy of dividing the C-130 fleet into two squadrons (Air Squadron 31 and Air Squadron 32) so that it would not be too much of a hassle to form a new Air Squadron.

FLIGHT MANUAL

Take off procedures:

  • Set flaps at 100% and throttle 15%
  • Wait for the plane to reach a speed of 250+km/h
  • Let the plane fly alone
  • Insert the landing gear if the plane is already in the air
  • Speed ??300km/h, set flaps 50% and throttle 30%
  • When reaching a speed of 400km/h, set the throttle to 100%, flaps to 0%, and trim to 48-49% until the aircraft flies stably

Landing procedures:

  • Slow down the aircraft to 200km/h before entering the runway
  • Set flap 50% and throttle 10% when reaching 200km/h
  • Land the plane gently
  • If already on the run, set flap 0% and throttle 5%
