Background:
The Sa.3800 was a single engine, low wing monoplane fighter designed and produced by Santoni from 1937-46.
The 3800 was designed by Eng. Emilio Laurenzi in 1935 after a request by the Regia Aeronautica to 4 companies to design a modern fighter for its regiments and as such, the 3800 was born.
It was powered firstly by a DB601 (1937-40) and then by a DB605 (1940-46), taking it to phenomenal speeds. It was an extraordinary fighter, averaging a 16:1 K/D ratio in all fronts.
The 182nd Autonomous Group "Pantere" was the most prolific group to deploy the 3800, of which 25 members only 3 shot down. It helped fight off a British naval invasion on Mogadishu in 1943, being deployed with 120kg "Delfino" torpedoes and crippling the British colonial fleet. Overall a fantastic fighter,it was employed as a ground attack aircraft after becoming obsolete in 1951, and dismissed from combat in 1957. Sixteen 3800s remain conserved, ten of which in Rome's Aircraft museum, three in Britain and two privately owned. One is still in flight conditions in Milan.
