Patrie II-class airship
The Patrie II-class was the main other experiment in airships on the SFR's part. Designed for the post-War world, this aircraft's role was much like that of it's ancient namesake: reconnaisance. For the post-War Republic, the main worry lay in consolidating her gains and rooting out Nova Evropan remnants, neither of which had many aerial threats. This aircraft's design is peculiar: To easen logistical burdens, it's actually powered by a steam engine capable of generating 600 HP. While not fitted with defensive armament, the airships were capable of carrying an emple supply of bombs. On top of being long-range aircraft, the Patrie IIs were also equipped as command aircraft, including a light-based semaphore system to provide radio-free air to ground communication.
While their track record was fairly successful, their cost, coupled with the comparatively low speed made thei meant that they would not be followed on and. Interestingly enough, a few would be traded to the CIR, where there were at the time several Federation-level airship programs owing to that country's mountainous terrain and the boost that the Squid posed. This established a duality whereby the SFR had a much bigger focus on rotary-wing aircraft than airships and vice versa for the CIR.
