@hypnotoad, I suggest while building, you tab out every once in a while for picture references to make a certain kind of plane. That is how I made my F-22 Raptor, my Cessna 172 Skyhawk, my Pitts Biplane Special, and even my Jet-powered Spitfire. After I am done with the look, I just tweak the design so the CoM, CoL, and CoF are in the right places and all weight on one side of the craft is counteracted by another weight on the other side of it. And there you have it, that is how I make my planes

Anyway, should I be using a pre-made base like the Great Lakes Freighter or should I make my own. (By the way, this is going to be the 1st replica of a ship that I have ever made in this game.).
