The TIE Renegade was designed to succeed the standard TIE Fighter. The Renegade was equipped with four medium ion cannons to destroy softer targets and four ATG-667A Proton Torpedos for taking out heavier ships. It was also equipped with flares, an ejector seat, and sometimes a stealth drive (depending on the mission). The Renegade could fly in atmosphere, but was mostly designed to operate in vacuum and match the role of the Y-Wing. Only one squadron was ever given the Renegades, but they put the small ships to great use. One pilot scored over twenty convoys and over one hundred rebel fighters to their name. The type went out of production after the Battle of Yavin, but the lone squadron used the Renegade until the Empire finally fell.
