In 1952 the United States was struggling with the amount of aircraft needed because with the Soviets new tech a fighter was needed for every 2 bombers in a squadron. And because of that there weren’t enough fighters to defend bases so they suffered catastrophic blows at the front. One Commander James “Vulture” Montgomery was a test pilot for the F-98B and commented on how it could probably win in a turn fight because of its maneuverability at speed. That gave the Air Force an idea. A squadron of the new Thundersticks was formed and it’s pilots were called “The Jacks” (at Christmas some people called them the Rudolphs because of the red inlets). With two 20 mm cannons, four 50 cals, and a pretty good bomb load, the amount of fighter escorts needed dropped significantly because the Thundersticks could defend themselves
