The TR-1A variant, which Lockheed built 28 units at the plant in Palmdale in 1979-1988, arose as a modification of the U-2R with significant changes in reconnaissance equipment, the installation of a new AN / UPO-X side-looking radar with synthesized image reproduction and modern means of electronic warfare. Initially, the TR-1A aircraft was planned to be used in the European theater of operations with the introduction of the PLSS (Precision Location Strike System) against targets in the territory of the Warsaw Pact countries.
