The Kyushu Arsenal 'Raiden' (ns: Raiden Shogun), or the object 126 is a Japanese bomber-interceptor first used in 1943 by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Forces.

I. Backstory

The Japanese air force contracted the Kyushu arsenal 150 units of interceptor fighter aircraft on 1939.
Design work started on mid-1939 by senior engineers and scholars from different universities for the said aircraft type.
The project, named as the Meteor (Japanese: ) came into life at early 1940, its main role is to counter any aircraft type and attain superiority over the skies of China, and later the Pacific.
The prototype did not fly until early 1942 due to engine delays that would power the aircraft.

The prototype was first flown in June 5, 1942, the turning point of the Pacific war, as it was flown it suffered ground loops while taking off and landing, and problems with stability were detected.
Knowing Japan began to become desperate on the war, improvements of the aircraft including gear redesign and taller tail gear finally allowed the craft to serve in 1943.

The main mission of the aircraft is to deter and shoot down incoming Boeing B-29 Superfortress taking off from China and Mariana Islands and is given a role of bomber-interceptor. The Raiden had considerable success on her operatioonal service, shooting down 99 bombers and 10 fighters in exchange of 13 aircraft in combat and 21 non-combat hull losses.

Aircraft produced in 1945 fell to Burmese and Chinese hands, with two sent to the Americas for evaluation.

Consequently Kyushu was cleared of production ban due to the craft's performance, the first two aircraft were designated as the YF-85 (conflicting dsgn. with parasite fighter) , and the USAAF ordered 135 units.

The Raiden served in the Korean War, gaining some success again against soviet aircraft, with Yakovlev and Lavochkin fighters being the main prey. Kill-loss ratio was 18:4:2.
