The F/A-54D "Jackal"
The UK’s take on turning the F-54A into a top-tier air superiority fighter. Built by Bristol Aerodynamics, it had stronger engines with thrust-vectoring, better maneuverability, and a bigger weapons bay packed with advanced missiles. Unlike the original F-54A, which was built for versatility and UAV deployment, the Jackal was all about air combat. With cutting-edge radar and electronic warfare systems, it was meant to dominate the skies while coordinating drone swarms.
But despite its potential, the Jackal was scrapped due to cost and complexity. The upgrades made it too expensive to build and maintain, and integrating all the new tech turned into a logistical nightmare. The RAF soon realized that upgraded F-54As could do almost the same job for way less money. With budgets shifting toward sixth-gen fighters and UAVs, the project was quietly shelved, leaving only a few prototypes as a reminder of what could have been.
