This plane was developed from a Soviet aerodynamic test craft, into a supersonic interceptor. Designed to engage bombers at high speed with its short range guided missiles, it broke the world altitude record in 1959 of 95,660 feet. 1100 SU-9s were built, and defended the Western USSR until the 1970s.
