INTRO

The Embraer EMB-314 "Super Tucano" is an advanced training, light attack turboprop aircraft that incorporates the latest advances in avionics and weaponry. Designed to meet the operational requirements of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) for a tactical attack aircraft, capable of operating in the Brazilian Amazon for the benefit of the Sipam/Sivam project, and as an initial trainer for fighter pilots.

HISTORY

Starting from its EMB-312G1 training model, initially designed for the Royal British Air Force (RAF), which has a series of modifications compared to the basic Tucano, Embraer began to study a new turboprop aircraft, which would meet the growing interest. from a market of high-performance trainers, which culminated in the EMB-312H or Tucano H model (H for Helicopter Killer or fighter-helicopter, so called for being able to operate at low height, hunting helicopters).

Beginning in the early 1990s, this work gained new momentum when the Americans launched the Joint Primary Aircraft Training System (JPATS) program, a joint US Air Force requirement ( USAF) and the United States Navy (US Navy), aiming to replace their trainers in use. To do this, Embraer partnered with Northrop Grumman, developing a prototype demonstration of concept, the Tucano PoC (Proof of Concept), but the Raytheon T-6 Texan II, a version manufactured under license for the Pilatus PC-9 , surpassed it.

At the same time, another program he participated in was the Canadian NFTC (NATO Flight Training in Canada, NATO Air Training Plan in Canada), a program that sought to select a turboprop and a jet aircraft for the training of new pilots of NATO. Again faced with the T-6 Texan II, it was disqualified in the end, with the Raytheon T-6 Texan II and the BAe Hawk jet being declared the winners.

Despite the setbacks suffered in the programs in which it participated, Embraer continued to develop its aircraft — until then, essentially a trainer — for the attack aircraft that it would later become.
