The 1967 Gyro-X is a two wheeled car that uses a gyroscope for self balancing, designed and built by Thomas Summers and Alex Tremulis. The Gyro-X made its debut at the 1967 New York International Auto Show at "The Wonderful World of Wheels", featuring the use of a mechanical gyroscope to control vehicle balance, making the vehicle safer and more fuel-efficient during operation. According to tests, the maximum speed of the Gyro-X can reach 125 miles per hour and it will not overturn during turns. The design background and technical details of the gyro X were inspired by the collaboration between gyro expert Thomas Summers and automotive designer Alex Tremulis. Summers applied gyroscope technology to missile navigation systems during World War II, while Tremulis served as design director for brands such as Ford. In 1966, they raised $750000 from investors to establish gyro transport systems and launched the gyro X 1 in 1967. Despite the technological innovation of the gyro X, due to its complex engineering design and unstable operation, gyro transport systems went bankrupt in 1970 and only produced one gyro X. This car was later purchased by collector Mark Brinker and sold to the Lane Museum in 2012. After nearly six years of restoration and reconstruction, the current collection price is approximately $5.6 million. The core technology of the gyro X lies in its mechanical gyroscope system, which is located between the pedals, has a diameter of 17.1 inches, weighs 230 pounds, and balances the vehicle at a minimum speed of 2400 RPM, with a normal speed of 3000 RPM. The power comes from an 80 horsepower Mini Cooper S four cylinder engine, which drives the rear wheels through a 4-speed gearbox. The side guide wheels on both sides are used to assist in reversing when the gyroscope balance is turned off.
