The F/A-9M Liger (-M stands for Maritime) is the A-9 export variant for the Peruvian Air Force (Fuerza Aérea del Perú – FAP) specially designed and equipped according to FAP request for an advanced Maritime Attack fighter aircraft, in order to support and reinforce its MiG-29 and Su-25 fleet. Peru has signed a contract with HarpiaDS for a total of 24 aircrafts. The main difference from the prototype A-9GS aircraft are:
- Development and Certification of the China-made C-805-ER Anti-Ship Missile
- Certification of use for the Russian-made Kh-31TIM Anti-Radiation Missile
- Certification of use for the Russian-made CHAYKA Targeting Pod
- Replacement of the previous Radar with the Russian-made Pika-L
- Software updates of main navigation and attack sensor systems
- General structural upgrades on secondary systems
- New camo colors for FAP maritime operations
The F/A-9M Liger is a dedicated, single-seat, single-engine, maritime attack aircraft designed for Maritime Surveillance, ASW and Anti-Ship Precision Bombing all-weather, day-and-night operations with extensive air-to-air capability. The aircraft possesses a low infrared (IR) signature and a reduced radar-equivalent cross-section to help prevent detection, while low vulnerability of structure and systems aid survivability and a compliment of integrated electronic countermeasures (ECM).
Because of Peru’s denial of a M2000 modernization program by Dassault, France imposed a ban to all French-made weapons and systems for the F/A-9M aircrafts. So, the Peruvian government turned to Russia in order to acquire modern laser-guided weapons and vital avionics subsystems for its F/A-9M fleet. Also, a 500mil USD contract signed alongside China for the development of a new Anti-Ship Missile based on China’s C-803 missile. The new missile has been designated as C-805-ER (Extended Range) in Peruvian inventory.
Extensive Russian-made electronic countermeasure (ECM) are fitted to protect the aircraft, include passive receiver antennas on the tailfin and two active jammer assemblies that are mounted on both outer wings’ leading edge of the aircraft.
Various munitions can be mounted on the one centerline, two underfuselage and six under-wing hardpoints, including bombs, missiles and rockets; payloads of up to 2,000 lb may be carried upon the centerline and the two innermost under-wing pylons, while the outer pylons can carry up to 1,000 lb. All eight of the under-wing hardpoints are plumbed for drop tanks to extend the aircraft's range, and the aircraft is also fitted with an aerial refueling receptacle located behind the canopy. Wingtip rails are provided for infrared guided air-to-air missiles. The F/A-9M is fitted with two 30 mm GSh-30-1 cannons. The aircraft is capable of carrying and firing new laser, INS and satellite guided bombs and has an all-digital modern glass-cockpit display with advance targeting equipment. The F/A-9’s CONPASS tactical navigation system combines information from multiple onboard systems such as the air data computer, radar altimeter, and GLONASS to continuously calculate the aircraft’s location and define the weapons’ release and impact point.
The Liger is using the BKR-3 Pika-L passive electronically scanned array forward radar with a maximum detection range of 200–250 km. The main radar can simultaneously attack eight targets (in the air, on land or on the water). The rear warning radar system can warn of attack from behind and allow it to fire its R-73s against pursuers without needing to turn the aircraft. The rear radar is unofficially called the N-011. In addition, the new F/A-9M aircraft integrates the Russian-made BlackEye Infra-red search and track (IRST) sensor, which is capable of passively detecting thermal emissions from air and ground targets in the aircraft's vicinity.
The F/A-9M Liger is also capable of carrying the sophisticated Kh-31TIM Anti-Radiation Missile against ground and maritime radiation sources (TIM stands for Tselevoye Ispol'zovaniye Mnogotselevoy / Multirole Target Usage). France declined to export the Damocles targeting pod so the Peruvian government asked Russia for a similar system. Peru finally purchased the CHAYKA-RBSN/M (Seagull) Advanced Airborne Maritime Targeting Pod (Rasshirennyy Bortovoy Struchok Natselivaniye/Morskiye) capable of operating in an undetectable passive mode or to actively jam hostile radar and detects surface targets up to 50km at any weather condition. It includes GLONASS satellite positioning, electro-optical/infrared imaging and laser designation capabilities and It also has video downlink capabilities just like U.S. or French-made targeting pods.
A missile approach warning system passively detects, tracks and neutralize incoming missiles. The Liger is also equipped to use a number of different communications standards and systems, including SATURN secure radio, Link-16, ROVER, and satellite uplinks.
