Now, you may be wondering "hmmmmm, isn't the DC8 a jetliner?"Well, you are right.

Before the days of the jetliner DC8, there was a project for a different aircraft designated the Model 1004 (to be called DC8 when in production)
The project started in 1943 for a fast fighter and/or bomber propelled by twin contra rotating props located behind the tail.

The prototype fighter XA-42 and bomber XB-42 went through trials with flying colours, only to be stopped by the end of the war.

During pre war times, the project was reinstated with the intention of making a civil airliner version called the DC8.

Powered by two 1600HP Allison V12s it would have had a top speed 292MPH and a service ceiling of 30000ft.

It could have also carried 37-48 passengers.
Unfortunately, none where sold, as no-one wanted to buy them as they where more expensive to buy and operate, and had more things to go wrong (so they thought) than the normal Convair240s or Martin 404s being used at the time.

VTOL for flaps.

This is a 1:1 scale version that I have made to be my gold special (as i am now gold. YAY!) . Enjoy!
