The Marines are after a close air support aircraft as the F35 has been decreed too valuable to use at low altitudes where it could be hit with small arms fire. The top brass have seen this demonstrator in action and would like to see its logical development. The plane needs to be able to fly on and off the carriers and be tough enough to work on rough fields also. Crew and airframe survival is vital as is agility at low altitudes.
