Dornier Do.215B-5 "Kauz" III
The Dornier Do 215B-5 was a heavy night fighter. All-metal monoplane with two-fin tail, closed cockpit and retractable landing gear with tail wheel. It was created under the leadership of K. Dornier in the design bureau "Dornier Werke" on the basis of the medium bomber Do 215?-4. It should be noted that the Do 215B aircraft is a deep modification of the Do 17Z, which was originally conceived as an export one. However, the Second World War began and the aircraft was never delivered for export, but was adopted by the Luftwaffe as a reconnaissance aircraft. The alteration was carried out similarly to the Do 17Z-10 with the installation of a new bow. Production ceased at the beginning of 1941. Serial Do 215B-5s were operated in the II / NJG 1 night fighter group until May 1944. Based in Holland, they intercepted night bombers. Do 215?-5 was finally withdrawn from service in May 1944.
