[1]military aircraft entries on WikipediaThe Polikarpov I-5 (in Cyrillic characters ?????????? ?-5) was a single-engine biplane fighter made by the OKB 84 directed by Nikolaj Nikolaevic Polikarpov together with Dmitrij Pavlovic Grigorovic and developed in the Soviet Union in the 1930s.The main fighter supplied to the Sovetskie Voenno-vozdušnye sily (VVS), the Soviet Air Force, from its introduction in 1931 until 1936, was later removed from the front line and, in the new role of trainer, assigned to the training departments of the pilots.Following the start of Operation Barbarossa, which destroyed much of the Soviet military air fleet, the I-5 still in flight conditions were equipped with four machine guns and bomb racks, then put into service as a light ground attack aircraft and also used as a night bomber in 1941. They were withdrawn in early 1942, when the Soviet aviation industry began to produce new models in that role and modernly designed aircraft such as the Ilyushin Il-2 Šturmovik. Wikipedia
