F-5A/B Freedom Fighter dan F-5E/F Tiger II adalah sebuah bagian dari keluarga pesawat tempur supersonik ringan yang dirancang dan diproduksi oleh Northrop, di Amerika Serikat, sejak tahun 1960-an. Ratusan pesawat ini masih dipakai oleh berbagai angkatan udara di dunia sampai abad ke-21, dan pesawat ini juga menjadi dasar untuk pengembangan beberapa pesawat lainnnya. Produksi pesawat F-5A dan F-5E berakhir pada tahun 1972 dan 1987.
Pengembangan pesawat ini berawal sebagai pesawat tempur ringan Northtrop yang dibiayai oleh swasta, pada tahun 1950-an. Generasi pertama F-5 Freedom mulai dipakai pada tahun 1960-an. Sampai 1972, lebih dari 800 pesawat diproduksi untuk negara sekutu Amerika Serikat pada Perang Dingin, sementara Angkatan Udara Amerika Serikat membeli sekitar 1100 pesawat.

Paruh akhir tahun 1970-an pesawat F-86 Avon Sabre dari Skadron Udara 14, Lanud Iswahyudi perlu untuk dicarikan penggantinya karena pesawat itu sudah tua dan diproduksi pada tahun 1950-an. Dari kajian yang dilakukan, terpilihlah penggantinya pesawat F-5E Tiger II dan proses pengadaannya dilaksanakan mulai tahun 1978 dengan nama Operasi Komodo. Operasi ini merencanakan tentang pengadaan pesawat, pendidikan penerbang dan teknisi, serta pembangunan fasilitas prasarana dan sarana pendukung operasional pesawat ini.

The F-5A / B Freedom Fighter and F-5E / F Tiger II are part of a family of supersonic light fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by Northrop, in the United States, since the 1960s. Hundreds of these planes were still used by various air forces in the world until the 21st century, and these aircraft also became the basis for the development of several other aircraft. Production of F-5A and F-5E aircraft ended in 1972 and 1987.
Development of this aircraft began as a Northtrop light fighter aircraft funded by the private sector, in the 1950s. The first generation F-5 Freedom came into use in the 1960s. Until 1972, more than 800 aircraft were produced for the United States allies during the Cold War, while the United States Air Force bought around 1100 aircraft.

Operating in Indonesia

The latter half of the 1970s F-86 Avon Saber aircraft from the 14th Air Squadron, Iswahyudi Air Force needed to find a replacement because the aircraft was old and produced in the 1950s. From the studies conducted, the replacement of the F-5E Tiger II aircraft was selected and the procurement process began in 1978 under Operation Komodo. This operation plans on aircraft procurement, pilot education and technicians, as well as the construction of infrastructure facilities and operational support facilities for this aircraft.
