The F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine, supersonic, all-weather, carrier-capable multirole combat aircraft. It was designed in the 1970s and has since become a backbone of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviation.

Development History

Origins: The F/A-18's design originates from the YF-17 Cobra, a lightweight fighter developed by Northrop for the U.S. Air Force’s Lightweight Fighter Program (which led to the F-16). After losing to the F-16, Northrop partnered with McDonnell Douglas to modify the YF-17 for naval use, creating the F/A-18 Hornet.

First Flight: The first F/A-18A flew on November 18, 1978.

Service Entry: The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps officially introduced the aircraft in 1983.

Design Features

Multirole Capability: The “F/A” in the name stands for Fighter/Attack, meaning it can perform both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

Carrier-Capable: It was designed for carrier operations, with reinforced landing gear and folding wings.

Fly-by-Wire: One of the first fighters with full fly-by-wire controls, improving agility and handling.

Variants

  1. F/A-18A/B (1980s) – Initial models; the A was single-seat, and the B was two-seat.

  2. F/A-18C/D (1987) – Improved avionics, night attack capability.

  3. F/A-18E/F Super Hornet (1999) – A larger, heavily upgraded version with new avionics, engines, and a longer range.

  4. EA-18G Growler (2009) – A dedicated electronic warfare variant.

Combat History

1986 - Libya: Operation El Dorado Canyon saw F/A-18s flying air defense suppression.

1991 - Gulf War: F/A-18s played a crucial role in Operation Desert Storm, conducting both air-to-air and bombing missions.

1999 - Kosovo: F/A-18s participated in Operation Allied Force.

2001-Present - Afghanistan & Iraq: Extensively used in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Global Users

Besides the U.S., several countries operate the F/A-18, including Australia, Canada, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, and Malaysia.

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet continues to serve as a primary fighter for the U.S. Navy, alongside the F-35C.
