History of the Establishment of PT Dirgantara Indonesia

Lipnur

The Nurtanio Aviation Industry Institute (Lipnur) began its history on December 16, 1961 when the Indonesian Air Force established the Aviation Industry Preparatory Institute (LAPIP) to prepare for the establishment of the aviation industry to support aviation activities in Indonesia. In the same year, LAPIP also signed a cooperation agreement with CEKOP, an aircraft manufacturer from Poland. The agreement includes the construction of an aircraft factory as well as human resource training and production, to manufacture the PZL-104 Wilga aircraft under license from CEKOP. The aircraft, which later became known as Wren, was finally successfully produced as many as 44 units. In 1965, through a presidential decree, the Aircraft Industry Preparatory Command (Kopelapip) and the Independent Aircraft Industry PN were officially established. In March 1966, Nurtanio Pringgoadisuryo died as a result of an accident during a test flight, and to honor his contribution, Kopelapip and the PN of the Aircraft Industry Berdikari were later merged into the Institute of Aviation Industry Nurtanio (Lipnur). Lipnur then produced a basic trainer aircraft named LT-200 and built a workshop to provide after-sales service.

B.J. Habibie

Meanwhile, B.J. Habibie, who since 1965 has worked at Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm (MBB), an aircraft manufacturer from Germany. In early December 1973, the President Director of Pertamina, Ibnu Sutowo, also met Habibie in Dusseldorf to explain Pertamina's dream to establish an aircraft industry in Indonesia. Habibie was then appointed as an Advisor to the President Director of Pertamina and asked to return to Indonesia immediately. In early January 1974, Pertamina formed a new division to focus on advanced technology and aviation technology (ATTP). On January 26, 1974, Habibie was summoned by President Suharto and later appointed as Presidential Advisor in the field of technology. In September 1974, ATTP signed a basic agreement for licensing cooperation with MBB of Germany and CASA of Spain for the production of the BO-105 helicopter and the NC-212 fixed-wing aircraft. Because Pertamina then faced a number of problems, on April 26, 1976, all assets belonging to the ATTP, Lipnur, and Indonesian Air Force divisions related to the aircraft industry were then used as capital to establish PT Industri Airplane Nurtanio (IPTN). B.J. Habibie was then appointed as the main director of IPTN. After all the physical facilities were completed, IPTN was inaugurated by President Soeharto in August 1976. On October 11, 1985, the company's name was changed to "PT Industri Airplane Terbang Nusantara", and on August 24, 2000, the company's name was again changed to like now.

2000 - now

In early 2012, Indonesian Aerospace managed to deliver 4 units of CN235 aircraft ordered by South Korea. In addition, Dirgantara Indonesia is also completing 3 units of CN235 aircraft ordered by the Indonesian Navy and 24 units of Super Puma Heli from Eurocopter. Dirgantara Indonesia is also exploring producing the C295 (CN235 jumbo version) and N219 aircraft, as well as cooperating with South Korea to produce the KFX stealth fighter. On January 12, 2022, the government officially handed over the majority of the company's shares to Len Industri, as part of an effort to form a state-owned holding company engaged in the defense industry.
