A bit of history; the puny P-39 Airacobra was just too small to easily fit the turbocharger, so many of them flew without one (which made them suffer at high altitudes). So, the enlarged P-63 Kingcobra was designed, and with a new Packard Merlin engine and gigantic turbocharger, it was a beast! But of course, the P-51D wasn't bad, either, so the P-63 was dropped in favor of more Mustangs... until they started lend-leasing these things to the Russians. "Officially", the Russians never used Kingcobras in combat. Unofficially, there were numerous reports of Russian pilots flying P-63s, and German flak guns downing P-63s. And some wreckage to prove it, too. It even earned its own NATO reporting name; "Fred".
