The F109E Lightning II interceptor was the first US aircraft capable of mach 2 speeds in level flight at sea level. It was equipped with two pylons, outboard wing fuel tanks, and guns. It carried an impressive arment of 2x 20mms and 2x 12.7mms mounted in the wing roots, as well as air-to-air missiles or gun pods that could be mounted on the wing pylons.
