The F-29S Jackal ISV (-S stands for Swiss and ISV for Interceptor & Strike Variant) is the F-29 export variant for the Swiss Air Force. The F-29S Jackal is specially designed and equipped according to Swiss Air Force (FAS) request for an advanced strike fighter and interdictor aircraft, in order to replace its ageing fleet of F-5E Tiger II aircrafts. The F-29S Jackal has incorporated all the previous modifications of the F-29K version except of the maritime strike capability, as requested by the SAF.
The Swiss government decided to proceed to a purchase of modern fighters in order to upgrade the air-defence capability of the country and enhance the aerial strike elements. So, the Defence Ministry of Switzerland organized an open competition with an extensive point system, regarding availability, combat readiness, maneuverability, electronic warfare survivability, multirole capability, 20.000hrs life-cycle cost and other operational aspects, all known to possible suppliers. Only 3 aircraft manufacturers applied to the request and more specifically, SAAB with the new Gripen-E, Dassault with the Rafale M and HarpiaDS with the F-29S. The Rafale M has been dismissed due to excessive cost and the GripenNG due to the refusal of the SAAB consortium to assemble the aircraft in Switzerland and taking the last position in the point system list. HarpiaDS was reluctant to allow for F-29 assembly in Switzerland and a contract has been signed for 28 aircrafts, with the first 4 to be constructed and delivered by HarpiaDS and the other 24 will be assembled in Switzerland by the State Aircraft Manufacturer Corporation. The new fighter supply contract has been deemed as “ALPINE SHIELD” by Swiss officials and will be supplemented by large sales of weapons and targeting pods too, mainly from US and France.
The F-5 Tiger needs replacement, especially since cracks grounded parts of the fleet recently. As of now, 30 out of 54 Tigers are operational. The type was set for retirement this year but may very well fly on for some time. In 2025, the 31 current F-18 Hornets reach the end of their service life. Extending their service for five years will cost about 450 million EUR.
After the Kuwaiti purchase of the aircraft and the successful deployment in Northern Iraq against ISIS, under the GCC coalition war effort, many nations commenced negotiations with Harpia in order to acquire the aircraft. The high availability rate of more than 85% and the lethal target elimination (97%) led many countries to rethink their fighter aircraft selection and ask for more information about the F-29 Jackal.
The F-29S Jackal MSV is a versatile, multirole, single-seat (or twin-seated -DS variant) and single-engine strike fighter designed for Precision Bombing in all-weather conditions day-and-night using sophisticated combat systems and cutting-edge-technology weapons. The versatility of the aircraft allows it to be equipped with both Air-to-Ground and Air-to-Air weapons and switch between SEAD/DEAD and CAP/OCA roles easily and efficiently. The aircraft possesses a low infrared (IR) signature and a reduced radar-equivalent cross-section to help prevent detection, while low vulnerability of structure and systems aid survivability and a compliment of integrated electronic countermeasures (ECM).
The new F-29S Jackal aircraft has been certified for carriage and deployment of the SPICE 2000 Guided Munition. The decision to carry the Israeli-made weapon has been taken in order to facilitate the global distribution of crucial spare parts supplied by Rafael. The Kuwaiti decision to acquire the F-29 has frustrated the Israeli government which imposed an embargo at aircraft systems exports, pushing Harpia to find alternative source of advanced avionics systems. Although, the Swiss decision to equip its new F-29S with Israeli bomb kits smoothened the Israeli restrictions and re-normalized the systems’ distribution.
The SPICE 2000 (Smart Precise Impact and Cost Effective guidance kit) is a forward and tail kit evolved from the proven Popeye missile intended to convert dumb/unguided bombs into smart guided air-to-surface munitions droppable from standoff ranges. It uses an advanced electro-optical guidance system to achieve outstanding precision against high value targets. Moreover, it is a 'fire and forget' weapon that automatically goes to its target once launching relying only on its navigation/seeker system. The Spice-2000 is a guidance mounted kit mounted on standard 2,000 pounds Mk 84 warhead/bomb. It consists of a forward section kit that homes the sensor package and the control section replacing the tail of standard Mk 84 bomb. All in all, the Spice-2000 has control foreplanes, tail control planes and mid-body control planes totaling 12 control surfaces in three groups of four. The resulting weapon has a range of approximately 60 kilometers with less than 3 meters Circular Error Probable (CEP) and can hit ground target with pinpoint accuracy. This weapon has day, night and adverse weather capability because of its dual infrared IR/CCD-TV seeker and advanced scene-matching algorithms. At close-in ranges, the weapon recognizes the target and correlates it with the intelligence imagery stored into memory. This capability translates into the ability to overcome target location error and GPS jamming. By the way, the weapon can choose among 100 potential targets and multiple weapons can be released at the same time providing simultaneous attack against various targets located across a given area capability. The Spice-2000 was designed for easy integration into many single-seat and twin-seat fighting aircraft with minimum aircraft modification, maintenance and crew training in order to operate the weapon. It has been successfully integrated onto the F-15, F-16, Tornado and more recently to F-29 aircraft.
FAS decided to acquire and equip the F-29S fkeet with the Paveway IV+ laser guided bomb. GBU-12 Paveway IV+ is the latest generation guided weapon selected by many nations for Precision Guided Bomb missions, and has been deployed on many combat operations around the globe. The combat-proven dual-mode guidance, together with height-of-burst and penetrating capability in one weapon system, enables the decision of target engagement to be made right up to the point of release. The Paveway IV+ bomb modifications include moving target engagement capability, autonomous maritime strike option, low-yield warhead variant, penetrator warhead development and range extension. The IV+ combat block has been recently tested and certified for field use and Switzerland is amongst the first countries to purchase this advanced strike weapon.
Extensive electronic countermeasure (ECM) are fitted to protect the aircraft, including passive receiver antennas on the tailfin and two active jammer assemblies that are mounted on both outer wings’ leading edges of the aircraft.
Various munitions can be mounted on the one centerline, two underfuselage and six under-wing hardpoints, including bombs, missiles and rockets; payloads of up to 3,000 lb may be carried upon the centerline and the two innermost under-wing pylons, while the outer pylons can carry up to 2,000 lb. All six of the under-wing hardpoints are plumbed for droptanks to extend the aircraft's combat range, and the aircraft is also fitted with an aerial refueling receptacle located behind the canopy. Wingtip rails are provided for infrared guided air-to-air missiles. The F-29S is capable of carrying and firing new laser, INS and satellite guided bombs and has an all-digital modern glass-cockpit display with advance targeting equipment. The F-29’s ATACNAV tactical navigation and attack system combines information from multiple onboard systems such as the air data computer, radar altimeter, GPS signal and advanced on-board powerful MMC-144L mission computer to continuously calculate the aircraft’s location and define the weapons’ release and impact point.
The F-29S Jackal is equipped with an AESA radar with a maximum detection range up to 350 km. The main radar can simultaneously track, asses, prioritize and attack 18 targets (in the air, on land or on the water). The rear warning radar system can warn of attack from behind and deploys all the counter-measures automatically without needing to turn the aircraft. In addition, the new F-29S aircraft integrates an Infra-red search and track (IRST) sensor in front of the canopy area, which is capable of passively detecting thermal emissions from air and ground targets in the aircraft's vicinity.
The F-29S Jackal is equipped with the Thales DamoclesNG (targeting pod) target designation pod combined with a NAVFLIR imager and IIR tracker, thus allowing the aircraft to designate, identify, and monitor multiple ground, aerial and sea targets to ranges up to 150km and transmitting target acquisition info to other platforms using the aircraft’s Tactical Data Link (Link16).
A missile approach warning system passively detects, tracks and neutralizes incoming missiles. The Super Liger is also equipped and certified to use a number of different communication standards and systems, including SATURN secure radio, Link-16, ROVER, and satellite uplinks.
