The Mirage 2000 was developed by Dassault Aviation for the Armée de l'Air to replace the Avion de Combat Futur program. Dassault Aviation aimed to meet French needs and repeat the commercial and international success achieved by the Mirage III, competing with the American F-16, as it lost competition in Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands precisely to the American fighter. The prototype's first flight took place on March 10, 1978. It entered service in 1982. It is currently in the process of being replaced by the Dassault Rafale, which entered service on June 27, 2006.
