Panavia 200 Tornado IDS ASSTA 3.1

3,547 Krikkit42  2.4 years ago

So … here’s an update. Note: My Tornado is still a work in progress, but I don’t want to overdo it, either. It’s meant to be simplistic (hence the lack of custom wings and landing gear), yet convey the essence of what makes it a Tornado. For this build, I chose to showcase the IDS variant with its latest iteration, the so-called „ASSTA 3.1“ upgrade, which was rolled out to the Luftwaffe fleet in 2015. This includes a number of previous upgrades in terms of avionics, extended weapons deployment capabilities and advanced data processing and communications systems. The ASSTA 3.1 Tornado, for instance, is now capable of deploying laser-guided bombs such as the Paveway II and III series. Future upgrades (ASSTA 4, 4.1 and 5) are currently under development and are supposed to extend the Tornado‘s service life until 2035, at which point it will be fully replaced by Eurofighter Typhoon and F-35 (selected for purchase in 2022).

New features for this build:

  • New livery (current light grey Luftwaffe paint scheme), including the cross pattée and the aircraft serial number
  • Cockpit somewhat more detailed (I’m not particularly into cockpits, so it’s still nothing special)
  • New IRIS-T short-range air-to-air missiles (Created by @FoxDynamicsWeapons)
  • New functional LITENING targeting pod
  • New GBU-12 Paveway II LGBs (Laser-guided bombs)
  • drastically improved flight performance and overall flight model
  • More cosmetic details like gun ports and other small things

Controls:

VTOL up: Sweep wings back
VTOL down: deploy flaps
Trim: trim
Brake: air brakes and spoilers

AG1: Extend refueling probe
AG2: lights
AG3: jettison outboard stations (flare pod and ecm pod)
AG4: jettison inboard stations (drop tanks)
AG5: jettison/dumb drop fuselage stations (GBU-12)
AG6: ./.
AG7:./.
AG8: Activate reverse thrust (only use right after touchdown!)

@Tridentgamer calm down already. Some of us have lives beyond SP. I just fixed the airbrake issues and re-uploaded the build. Enjoy.

@Numbers2 True that. It can be a little annoying to get just the right angle. Glad it’s working for you, though.

Yeah I figgured it out eventually you actuallyhave a really grate system but the litening pod has trouble continuously keeping track of a target unless your straight and level @Krikkit42

@Numbers2 just checked, they work fine. But since they’re LGBs… well, you do actually need to „lase“ the target, using the LITENING pod which has its own camera view. It locks onto the target automatically but you need to be at an appropriate angle for the pod to acquire lock and to release the bombs.

@MAHADI Thanks, I tried that with the update that I just uploaded here (just re-download from this post). It does yield more control at slower speeds, also feels a bit sluggish now. Guess that’s something I can get used to, though.

@Krikkit42 all you need to do is reduce the rotator speed down to 20% for all the rear wing rotators (Roll, Pitch, Trim) and see the magic

@MAHADI, hey, care to check out the improvements? ;-) Don’t worry about the high number of drag points, the XML has been updated again since the original upload. The actual number is just above 2,000. I also followed your advice of shifting CoM and CoL, so now it flies reasonably well. It’s still got some handling problems at slow speeds but I’ll keep working on it, so that might improve with the next update.
