Gloster Cyclone Mk 1

40.2k Typhoon03  6.0 years ago

By early 1943 it was clear the Nazis had the upper hand in jet fighter technology. In order to combat these new high tech weapons Gloster was commissioned to create a stop-gap hybrid aircraft until the pure jet powered Meteor could be brought into service. Aided by the Supermarine design team Gloster came up with the Cyclone, which was put into production by Handley Page. 400 were built, equipping squadrons in Europe, fighting the Me 262, and in South-East England where they fought the V1 flying bombs. The plane was heavily armed with 7 20mm cannon and two 250 pound bombs. By the war's end they had shot down 30 262s, destroyed 245 V1s and carried out numerous ground attack missions. Only 2 survive to this day. AG1 drops the bombs, AG2 switches on the landing lights and AG3 starts the jet engine.
