CA-13 Loggerhead
Flying Boat, VTOL - The CA-13 Loggerhead is designed as an automated tourism aircraft. Piloting is fully remote and there is no pilot's cockpit. A camera is provided at the tip of the tail, which is useful for takeoff and landing. The aircraft has generously large windows and staggered seating so every one of the 18 passengers has a reasonable view.
VTOL performance margin is low (+70% required to climbout), so careful operation is required, and in fact it is best operated with very short landings at low speed.
Stall speed (no vectored thrust) = 150+ mph
Thrust for hover = 70% (approx)
AG1 = Left side windows
AG2 = Right side windows
AG8 = Gyro
VTOL = Tilt rotor control (Tilt rotors rotate 0-95 degrees)
F5 = Front row passenger
F6 = Pilot cam
F7 = Mid-cabin passenger
F8 = Rear row passenger
Takeoff and flight instructions:
- Adjust tilt of rotors to vertical or just forward of vertical.
- Go to full throttle.
- As altitude and speed build gradually tilt the rotors forward (if you do this too suddenly you will stall).
- When rotors are fully forward, deactivate gyro (AG8). You are now in an aerodynamic control regime.
- For turns, a little upwards tilt of the rotors may result in a tighter turn.
Landing instructions:
- Line up on landing zone at low altitude.
- Reduce throttle to 70% or slightly less.
- Tilt rotors full up and back (95 degrees).
- Turn on gyro (AG8)
- Apply air brakes as needed.
- Reduce speed and altitude with pitch and only small throttle changes.
