The Heinkel He 162 Volksjäger was a German single-engine, jet-powered fighter aircraft that entered service with the Luftwaffe at the end of World War II. Developed under the Emergency Fighter Program, it was designed and built quickly and was largely made of wood as metal was scarce and given priority to other aircraft. Volksjäger was the official name of the Reich Air Ministry for the government program design competition that the He 162 design won. Other names given to the aircraft included Salamander, which was the code name for the wing-building program, and Spatz ("Sparrow"), which was the name given to the aircraft by the Heinkel aviation company.
