After the Geneva convention Soviet leader Khruschev ordered to build an intercontinental civillian aircraft capable of reaching 6000km in a single flight, Tupolev designed two variants, Tu-116 and Tu-114. Both succeded from Tu-95, When Khruschev was invited to visit the US in 1959 The Tu-116 VIP transport was ready but Khruschev insisted to travel via Tu-114 Airliner as it did not involve exiting in the rear of the plane. The Tu-114 first entered service in 1961, two years after Khruschev’s US visit and retired in 1991. Only 32 were built
