CG-144 ''Chimera'' CoilGun

Hello everyone, PyrhPan would like to introduce it’s newest contender of metal launching smaller pieces of metal. The CG-144 “Chimera” CoilGun, a new revelation in our weapons development.

In regards to our highest caliber weapons, RailGuns and RailCannons always seem to fall under this category, more specifically in the top-tier places. However, we’ve decided to diverge from this classification of weapon momentarily, and try out a completely different avenue of weaponry. To summarize, a Coil-Gun is an array of magnetized coils that, when activated, magnetize an object towards it. Usually, this would result in said object flinging back and forth through the coil, eventually coming to a mid-air stop without ever actually leaving the Coil’s magnetic grasp. However, if you line up several coils consecutively, and activate them accordingly so that when the object passes through one coil, the coil de-magnetizes, and the next coil in the array activates, you can effectively launch an object through the coils at some respectable velocities.

Taking this concept a few steps further, you can create what is effectively known as a CoilGun, a long array of coils that use this technique, capable of accelerating a projectile with an exponential increase in speed, with no theoretical speed limit. The CoilGun need not be used for military warfare however, there are in fact many examples of non-lethal devices that use the same CoilGun mechanisms, but are used for different purposes. For instance, the Large Hadron Collider is technically a CoilGun! Instead of accelerating an object down a long straight barrel, it continuously accelerates particles in a massive 17 mile long ring, where said particles can get boosted to absolutely unfathomable speeds. The fastest speed ever recorded in the LHC was roughly 90% the speed of light! Albeit, the LHC only accelerates atoms and other atomic to subatomic particles, and cannot be used to launch a projectile.

Regardless, the CoilGun is an amazing piece of technology, capable of even more amazing feats. There are however, a couple disadvantages with the rudimentary CoilGun. The most notable would be a general lack of accuracy, as CoilGuns suspend the round mid-air, and therefore cannot utilize rifled barrels. This creates some complications with stabilizing rounds, as the simple method of rifling is no longer applicable. This CoilGun utilizes APFS Shells, which significantly increases accuracy, as the rounds fly through the air like a dart, rather than like a potato. Additionally, another notable disadvantage of CoilGuns are the fact that they need lots of barrel length to accelerate rounds to a significant velocity. CoilGuns of smaller size typically reflect their muzzle velocity, as the smaller barrel allows less time for the round to accelerate. RailGuns on the other hand, can store massive amounts of energy in a relatively small space, and don’t necessarily need massive amounts of space to operate. They have their own disadvantages of course, but we aren’t talking about RailGuns at the moment.

The solution to the problems mentioned above is for us, relatively simple; just use freakin’ ridiculously strong magnetic coils, and FS Rounds. Of course, it’s not that simple with other less experienced military forces, but we tend to be advanced enough to “play around with what we’ve got”. The CoilGun will likely not replace the RailGun, especially in the presence of PyrhPan’s massive RailGuns and RailCannons, but it may still be increased in power, and eventually, who knows! It may become a staple of PyrhPan’s technology.

Controls:

Yaw to rotate the turret, FireWeapons to fire. Really not much else, I just wanted to make a CoilGun for the heck of it. You’ll notice that contrary to our RailGuns and RailCannons, the CoilGun has a very small muzzle blast. This is due to the fact that it uses no propellant, and only magnetic force. The flash that ejects itself out of the barrel is only the result of the round accelerating so fast out of the gun, that it heats up the air around it enough to create a small plume of plasma. Which of course is still ridiculous, but relatively harmless in comparison to what else comes out of the barrel.

This CoilGun in particular is fitted with an autoloader and an MMT Module, much like almost all of our rapid-fire high caliber weapons, to ensure a relatively high rate of fire, and practically infinite ammunition. Of course in SP, this doesn’t really correlate all that well, so you’ll have to settle with 250 rounds instead.

Anyway idk what else to say other than I really like the exposed wires at the back, you’ll notice that when you rotate the gun, they swing around a bit. Just a small, barely noticeable detail, but I like it.

Have Fun!

@_PolarSpirit well their’s is a “Mass Driver” and mine’s a Coil Gun, so neither is a Railgun. But if I were you, I’d go with the Chimera. 350mm of iron tearing through the air at over 20,000fps might as well be the end for anything it hits.

@ManManTheWeaponsMan take advantage of the intricate designs and details on some of the parts in SP, mainly parts in the Gizmos and Engines section. These parts, when scaled nicely or positioned in a creative way, can have wonderful effects on your build. Rotator notches can be used to look like radiators, or some other corrugated surface. Winches can be used to look like coils, like I’ve demonstrated here. Engines can even be used as cooling fans, there’s no limit as to what you can conceive in this game!

iPad: "Oh hell naw. I'm not gonna load this."
Part Count: "But it's only 75."

iPad: "I meant the projectile. I'm gonna die once you press that 'fire' button. Then you'll see some REAL FIRE."

@WAR122 I’ve been thinking about that, but my Widowmaker 500mm. RailCannon Turret is slightly similar in appearance, so it may be a little anticlimactic to create the one from Transformers.

@Highbraker what goboygo1 said, I utilized Overload to edit the dimensions of parts, and make them look fitting on the weapon. Winches look like coils of metal from the outside, which works perfectly for this. Magnets, Rotators and Small Rotators, and even Detachers can look pretty neat when you stretch or compress their dimensions, and they help in both decreasing the part count, and increasing the visual quality.
