The Bayirama Class submarine is a class of diesel-electric submarines developed and fitted by the United States Navy during World War II. The class is an improvement of the Catshark Class submarine. 120 boats were built, making it the largest submarine type in the United States Navy, with a small number still in service.

Service incident

On 26 November 1944, she sank the Imperial Japanese Navy's aircraft carrier Shino with six torpedoes, displacing 72,000 tons, the largest warship ever sunk by a submarine.

On 21 November 1944, the submarine spotted and tracked a Japanese naval battle group consisting of Yamato and Nagato in the Taiwan Strait, during which the submarine fired four torpedoes and sank the battleship Kongo and the destroyer Uraichi.

The highest number of sunk ships of this class was the Spiny tail submarine, with a total of 33 vessels and a cumulative displacement of 116,454 tons.
