Hiller 360/OH-23 Raven RI-1 (Soekarno)
In 1947, United Helicopters (eventually called Hiller Aircraft) built a prototype model for the 360X helicopter. a year later, on October 14, 1948, this model received a production certificate from the United States Civil Aviation Agency (CAA). They began to produce the Model 360 as UH-12 (UH-12 in France, UH-12 in Germany). In 1949, the UH-12 became the first helicopter to make a continental flight from California to New York. When they improved the capabilities of the engine and rotor blades, this model was named as UH-12A. And this version was adopted by French and US troops, which are also used by various civil aviation operators in several countries.
Service in Indonesia
Wiweko Soepono was the one who decided to purchase this helicopter directly to its factory in the United States. And on October 14, 1950, Wiweko, was declared to have graduated as a helicopter pilot and received a certificate and helicopter pilot wing. 2 (two) of these aircraft arrived in Indonesia in the latter half of 1950 and were stationed at Andir Air Base, Bandung. This aircraft became the first rotary propeller aircraft owned by the Indonesian Air Force and also Indonesia and was the beginning of the formation of the Air Force Helicopter Helicopter Squadron. This helicopter arrived in unassembled form, and the assembly and first flight were carried out by Young Commodore Wiweko Soepono on December 24, 1950 and made the first helicopter pilot in Indonesia. Aside from being a training helicopter, it also functions as a reconnaissance aircraft, a connecting plane and an emergency rescue plane. When the second plane arrived in December 1950, it turned out that the condition was damaged so that only one was left and finally those who were still able to operate were given H-101 registration. And on January 15, 1951, Wiweko Soepono flew it with the first Indonesian President, Sukarno, around the capital of Jakarta for 15 minutes. This makes the first President of Indonesia, Sukarno, the first president in the world to have a presidential helicopter and dare to fly with him. Starting in 1953, the Indonesian Air Force pioneered the formation of the Helicopter Experiment Squadron and this aircraft laid the foundation, where it played an important role for the movement of personnel to areas that were not possible to be reached by fixed wing aircraft. In addition to these tasks, the aircraft was also prepared at the Presidential Palace with the person in charge being LU II Joem Sumarsono.
